Day 81 - Belfast, PEI (Extra Rest Day)

Special Stuff: Time with Brian

Brian and I take a look at the map of Prince Edward Island (PEI) and pick East Point as the destination for a Sunday drive. It is just an easy going day.

We start off back in Charlottetown with a little walk around and some lunch. Brian feasts on some lobster. I get to sample it and get a taste of the most amazing browned butter!

We check out the East Point light house - where they have memorial benches for the lighthouse keepers - the first one back in the 1800's was a lighthouse keeper for 30 years! That must have been a really lonely life!

We are still only looking out into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, even though it feels like we are on the ocean.

To have the full PEI experience, I convince Brian that we need to get some PEI potatoes from one of the roadside stands. He obliges. As we leave, I get a good laugh as I discover we are on Red Head Road (must have been be alot of red heads down this road when they named it).

Our return drive takes us through Georgetown - which has an old post office (that is still a post office)! Each 'bigger' town in PEI has a few of these old stone and brick buildings. They have such a rustic beauty and charm.

Our day wraps up back at the campground with us preparing for the next few days. Brian and I will be travelling separately for a few days. He needs to stay back an extra night at this campground as he could only get a ferry booking on Tuesday. He will then head up to North Sydney, Nova Scotia and await my arrival in a few days. I check through my supplies and confirm that I've got all I need to be on my own and camp for a few days. I will likely stay in motels, but I'm fully prepared to camp if things go that way.

PEI has been a lovely 8th province to visit. It feels like a place that would be a great to come back to for an extended bike ride vacation. It would be nice to spend a winter planning for the trip (maximizing the use of their amazing trail network and cozy accommodations) and learning PEI history.
